Hitler's prime Nazi objective was to make Germany Judenrein — cleansed of Jews. While there have been many instances of genocide as judged by the extent of destruction or injury of groups of people, the total annihilation of a people deemed inferior was not an officially sanctioned purpose of a national government as it was in Hitler's Nazi Germany. It is this which differentiates the Nazi action against the Jews from other genocidal attempts against humanity. Genocide, obscured in the depersonalized language of the "Final Solution," became a governmental program of the highest priority. In many ghettos, residents used hand-carts to transport bodies of the dead. Cart after cart carried the dead which were dumped into huge graves. |
